“For the past few years, the phrase being unapologetically Māori has echoed through our communities. While I agree with the sentiment, I believe we must first embrace a realistic understanding of what being Māori truly means. Only then can we confidently achieve this vision.
The structure of a Charitable Trust is not inherently Māori, yet we utilize it as a vehicle for positive change—for better, for all. Does this make us hypocrites? Or do we see it as a tool, molding and shaping it into an organization delivered by Māori, for all, with a kaupapa underpinned by Te Ao Māori at its very heart?
I BELIEVE THAT IS THE ANSWER.
We need to recognize that the answers have always been within us—our WHAKAPAPA. Somewhere along the way, we have lost the belief in our inherent greatness, forgetting what makes us Māori at our core. Yet, when our time comes, as we lie in our marae, draped in a korowai, surrounded by Te Reo Māori spoken by our pae, it becomes evident: EVERYONE WANTS TO BE MĀORI WHEN THEY DIE. So why not embody that greatness while we are alive?
This is the mission of Manu-Nui-Ariki Charitable Trust—to navigate challenges and barriers with the unshakable belief that we are already GREAT. Our role is to remember, to act, and to uplift our people with this belief as our foundation.” - Herewini Lloyd
